Frontier Airlines to Add First-Class Seats Amid Shifting ULCC Landscape

By Drooid · · How we work

Frontier’s First-Class Rollout

Frontier Airlines announced that it will introduce first-class seats on its Airbus fleet in the coming year. The move includes installing SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi on board, part of the carrier’s effort to broaden revenue streams while maintaining its ultra-low-cost (ULCC) identity. Frontier’s chairman, Bill Franke, emphasized that the new product is intended to give consumers an upscale option without trying to match the luxury of carriers such as Singapore Airlines.

Industry Pressures Driving Change

The ULCC sector, long defined by minimal frills and low base fares, has faced a “reckoning” as pilot salaries, maintenance costs and other operating expenses have risen sharply. At the same time, a surge in premium-travel demand has pressured budget carriers to diversify offerings. Larger airlines—including United and Delta—have begun applying fee-based pricing to their own economy cabins and even to first-class products, eroding the cost advantage that ULCCs once enjoyed.

Bill Franke’s Airline Legacy

William Augustus “Bill” Franke, 89, co-founded private-equity firm Indigo Partners and has invested in budget carriers worldwide, from Chile to Hungary and the Philippines. He was an early backer of Ryanair and led Spirit Airlines until 2013 before becoming Frontier’s chairman later that year. In 2022 he attempted to merge Spirit with Frontier, but Spirit shareholders approved a cash offer from JetBlue. A federal court ruled that the JetBlue-Spirit deal violated antitrust laws in January 2024, and Spirit subsequently collapsed in May, marking the largest U.S. airline failure in decades. Franke remains a major Frontier shareholder and says the company continues to generate “startup ideas” regularly.

Official Outlook and Future Plans

Frontier’s leadership frames the first-class addition as a competitive response to evolving consumer expectations and a means to sustain profitability. The airline also plans to expand Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, positioning itself among a growing list of carriers offering satellite-based connectivity.

Implications for the ULCC Model

By adding a premium cabin, Frontier signals a potential shift in the ULCC formula: offering optional comfort while preserving low-fare base tickets. If successful, the strategy could prompt other discount carriers to introduce similar tiers, further blurring the line between traditional full-service airlines and budget operators.
