In 2011 Apple bought Siri, a spin-off of SRI International’s DARPA-funded CALO project founded by three engineers (Dag Kittlaus, Tom Gruber, Adam Cheyer), and embedded it in the iPhone 4S. After incremental updates and the 2024 launch of Apple Intelligence, Apple unveiled Siri AI at WWDC on 8 June 2026 in partnership with Google Gemini, bringing context-aware assistance to iOS 27 on iPhone 15 Pro models.
