Heavy Rain and Squally Winds Expected Across West Bengal
Parts of West Bengal are forecast to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds beginning September 22, 2026 and lasting through the end of the forecast period. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes the weather to a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal. Coastal districts of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas are expected to see the strongest rains, with wind gusts of 40–50 km/h. In other south-Bengal districts, including Kolkata, thunderstorms with gusts of 30–40 km/h may occur until September 25.
Forecast Details and Affected Areas
The low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the north Andaman Sea is projected to intensify into a depression on September 21, 2026 and deepen further on September 22. It will move west-northwestward, reaching the west-central Bay near the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts by the morning of September 23.
Beyond West Bengal, the IMD warns of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in north coastal Andhra Pradesh (Sept 22-24) and south Odisha (Sept 22-25). Similar conditions are forecast for Chhattisgarh and Telangana (Sept 23-25) and for Vidarbha on September 24-25. Sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are also slated for heavy rain from September 23 onward.
Official Advisory from the India Meteorological Department
The IMD issued a marine advisory urging fishermen not to venture into deep sea from September 21 along the West Bengal coast and to return to shore by that night. Swell waves are expected with periods of 16.0–19.0 seconds and heights of 0.9–1.1 m through the evening of September 21. Boats are advised to operate with “utmost vigilance” and recreational activities to be undertaken with care.
