Vivek Ramaswamy’s Billion-Dollar Fortune Shapes Ohio Gubernatorial Race
By Drooid · · How we work
Wealth Overview
Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy entered the Ohio governor’s race with an estimated net worth of roughly $2.3 billion, positioning him as the nation’s second-richest governor-elect prospect and the third-wealthiest elected official after President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. The bulk of his wealth stems from Roivant Sciences, the drug-development firm he founded in 2014 and took public via a SPAC in 2021. Roivant’s market value now hovers near $29 billion, driven by recent FDA approvals and strong clinical data.
Business Background
Roivant’s growth accelerated after the Phase 3 success of brepocitinib for dermatomyositis and the FDA’s August approval of the oral therapy Lisraya. A multi-billion-dollar settlement with Moderna in March further bolstered the company’s balance sheet. Ramaswamy has gradually reduced his ownership, selling $106 million of stock in late 2023 and roughly $400 million in the first quarter of this year.
Campaign Financial Moves
If Ramaswamy continued selling shares at a similar pace through the second and third quarters, analysts estimate an additional $700 million in stock sales, bringing total disposals to about $1.2 billion over the past year of campaigning. By the end of 2025 he and his wife held 61.8 million Roivant shares (an 8.7 % stake). Three months later that stake fell to 38.9 million shares, or roughly 5.4 % of the company, after the expiration of in-the-money options. With ownership now below the 5 % reporting threshold and no longer serving as an officer or director, further sales are no longer required to be disclosed. Current estimates place his cash and liquid securities at up to $1.3 billion. In addition, he retains an estimated $130 million stake in Chapter, a Medicare-navigation platform he co-founded in 2020, which raised $100 million this year at a $3 billion valuation.
Potential Impact
Ramaswamy’s financial resources enable extensive campaign spending and high-visibility advertising, potentially reshaping Ohio’s political landscape. However, the emphasis on his billionaire status also fuels voter concerns about elite detachment, making wealth both an asset and a liability in the contest for the governor’s office.
