History

Historical Context

In January 2009 Russia cut off gas flowing through Ukraine, halting supplies to 18 European countries and exposing the bloc’s reliance on Russian pipelines. The crisis cost Gazprom roughly $1.5 billion in lost sales and prompted EU leaders such as José Manuel Barroso to call for diversification. Today Naftogaz and Hungary’s MOL are building oil-product storage near the Ukrainian-Hungarian border to guard supplies against renewed Russian pressure.
