Historical Context

In 1975 President Gerald Ford signed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, barring most U.S. crude-oil exports after the 1973 OPEC embargo. Congress lifted the ban in December 2015, and crude shipments then jumped nearly 600% to about 3.2 million barrels per day by 2020. Lawmakers such as Rep. Tim Burchett now invoke that legacy while pushing a diesel-export ban.
