Historical Context

After restoring sovereignty in 1991, Lithuania applied for NATO in 1994, joined the alliance in March 2004 after the 1999 Washington summit’s Membership Action Plan, and saw about 2,500 NATO troops deployed to its borders by 2014. Today Minister Robertas Kaunas unveiled 5-km, 20-km and 50-km fortifications and evacuation routes through Poland, reinforcing NATO’s eastern deterrence.
