The price of uncooked ground beef reached $7.16 per pound in August 2026, up from $6.63 a year earlier, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Administration Response and Policy Actions
She also blamed policies from the former Biden administration for “destroy[ing] our cattle herds” and for climate-change measures that she says discouraged herd expansion. President Donald Trump signed two executive orders in August 2026: one directing the Interior Department to review the status of gray and Mexican wolves under the Endangered Species Act and to update compensation standards for ranchers affected by predators; the other ordering the USDA to prioritize investigations of potential Packers and Stockyards Act violations and to expand interstate shipment programs. In addition, the administration announced a plan to waive tariffs on up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef imports for a 90-day period, a move the White House described as a way to lower consumer prices.
Opposition from Ranchers and Industry Groups
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the import waiver, with CEO Colin Woodall stating that flooding the market with “government-subsidized, below-market beef” would harm domestic producers and depress cattle prices. Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana echoed this concern, writing that the policy would make it harder for American ranchers to rebuild the herd and could ultimately raise prices for consumers.
