In the early hours of a Sunday, police were alerted to a violent incident at a rented two-storey accommodation in Dehugaon, Pune. Akash Ramdas Baraskar, a 31-year-old software engineer, was found on the ground after allegedly stabbing his 28-year-old wife, Shubhangi Akash Baraskar, in the neck and then jumping from the balcony. Shubhangi, who was three months pregnant, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Baraskar sustained a fractured leg and other injuries and is receiving treatment at a government hospital.
Land-Purchase Dispute Background
According to the FIR lodged by Shubhangi’s father, Satish Kait, the couple had repeatedly argued over Baraskar’s decision to purchase agricultural land in his native village of Ahilyanagar. Shubhangi reportedly preferred that the family’s money be used to acquire property in Pune instead. The dispute intensified after Baraskar bought a plot five to six months earlier, leading to frequent quarrels, including the argument that preceded the fatal incident.
Legal Action and Investigation
Police have registered a murder case against Akash Baraskar under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are examining the weapon, collecting forensic evidence from the room, and reviewing statements from neighbors who said the couple argued until around 4 a.m. Baraskar will be taken into custody once his medical condition permits.

Senior police inspector Vikram Bansode of Dehu Road police station said the initial robbery claim made by Baraskar “fell apart” after residents reported the ongoing quarrel. He added that Baraskar admitted to killing his wife with a sharp weapon before inflicting self-injuries and jumping from the balcony. The police continue to probe the motive and circumstances surrounding the dispute.
