History

Historical Context

The Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act, passed in March 2019 after the 2014 repeal of the earlier 1995 ban, restored total statewide prohibition. When soldier Zakaria Lalhriattluanga was killed on 20 September 2023 by allegedly intoxicated youths, authorities invoked the 2019 Act and the 2023 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Young Mizo Association and village council then called for stricter enforcement.
