LA28 Unveils Venice Beach Triathlon Courses for 2028 Games

Event Overview
On Sept 23, Los Angeles 2028 organizers announced preliminary Olympic and Paralympic triathlon courses in the Venice Beach Zone. The routes feature a single transition hub near the shoreline and a shared finish line that frames the Pacific Ocean. Designed to be largely flat, the courses aim to produce fast, spectator-friendly racing.
Course Layout and Competition Format
- Swim (Olympic individual) – A 1.5 km ocean swim launched directly from the beach, consisting of a 1,000 m lap, a brief 25 m beach run, then a 500 m lap.
- Bike (Olympic individual) – Eight laps of 5 km each, weaving the Venice Beach path and adjacent streets, totaling 40 km and passing the iconic Venice sign.
- Run (Olympic individual) – Four laps of 2.5 km (10 km total) that cross the Venice Canals bridges before returning to the transition area.
The mixed relay follows a women-men-women-men order; each athlete completes a 350 m swim, a 6.6 km bike leg (two 3.3 km laps), and a 1.6 km run (two 800 m laps).
Paralympic individual races begin with a 750 m swim from a barge beyond the breakwater, followed by a 20 km bike segment (three 6.6 km laps) and a 5 km run. Six sport classes will compete.
Schedule of Olympic and Paralympic Triathlon Events
- Women’s individual – July 15.
- Men’s individual – July 16.
- Mixed relay – July 20 (scheduled).
- Paralympic individual races – August 18-19 (scheduled).
Testing and Operational Readiness
The courses will undergo operational testing during the World Triathlon T50 Triathlon World Tour event in Venice from July 16-18, 2027. This trial will let athletes train on the layout and enable organizers to assess performance and safety ahead of the Games.
