On 18 April 1988, the United States Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis, striking two Iranian frigates, oil platforms and aircraft in retaliation for the mining of the USS Samuel B. Roberts during Operation Earnest Will. The attack helped push Iran toward a July 1988 cease-fire that ended the Iran-Iraq war.
