Diane Tempel-Bornett, spokesperson for the German War Graves Commission, explained that the identification tags are being deciphered but have not yet yielded the soldiers’ names. She emphasized that the presence of the tags with the bodies does not guarantee they belong to those individuals, although it is possible. The commission’s standard procedure involves comparing physical clues—such as height, age, personal items, and any surviving documentation—with military records held by the German Federal Archives in Berlin. Tempel-Bornett said the commission can only speculate about how the soldiers and motorcycle entered the river.
