Nissan Unveils 2027 Rogue Hybrid: e-POWER Series Hybrid Arrives with Subtle Design Shift

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Launch Details

Nissan announced the 2027 Rogue Hybrid, the first U.S. model to use its e-POWER series-hybrid system. The vehicle will debut in the United States in fall 2026 with the SR trim equipped with the Tech Package, followed by the full SV, SR and Platinum line-up in early 2027. Pricing starts at $35,490 for the base SV and reaches $45,065 for the Platinum version. All models come with standard all-wheel drive and a 12.3-inch touchscreen plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Design Philosophy Shift

Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, Ponz Pandikuthira explained that the company is abandoning “piano-black” interior trim and overt chrome exteriors because fingerprints and excessive shine quickly diminish perceived quality. Instead, the Rogue Hybrid uses matte, family-friendly materials and “subtle paint treatments” that emphasize understated sophistication. Physical knobs and toggles replace a fully touchscreen layout to preserve tactile feedback for critical functions.

> “There was a trend to pull buttons out of cars,” — Hiran Patel, senior design manager

Pandikuthira said the new design balances aesthetics with everyday usability, describing the vehicle as “not a jewelry car” but a mainstream crossover built for functional transportation.

Powertrain Architecture

The e-POWER system is a series hybrid: a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine acts solely as a generator for a 1.67 kWh lithium-ion battery. Two electric motors—202 hp at the front axle and 134 hp at the rear—deliver a combined 225 hp and instant torque, propelling the vehicle without a mechanical link to the engine. Nissan cites fuel-economy estimates of 40 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 38 mpg combined, though EPA numbers are not yet released. The system supports one-pedal driving and a “Smooth Stop” feature that modulates brake pressure.

Production and Market Strategy

The initial batch will be built at Nissan Motor Kyushu’s plant in Kanda, Japan, with U.S. production slated to begin next year. Nissan is evaluating a third production shift at its Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi facilities to meet anticipated demand.

> “We’re now maxing out the production capacity in the U.S.,” — Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas

Meunier indicated that a third shift could add hundreds of jobs and help the company approach its goal of producing 80 % of U.S. sales domestically by 2030.

Features and Safety Suite

Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-centering assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver-attention monitoring. ProPILOT Assist with hands-off traffic-jam support is standard on the SR trim and optional on higher trims. Interior highlights feature dual 12.3-inch (or optional 14.3-inch) displays, physical climate controls, and a wireless Qi-2 charging pad. The Platinum trim adds a supplemental front side-impact airbag and dual wireless chargers.

Official Statements & Responses

Pandikuthira emphasized that the design changes reflect customer feedback on durability and cleanliness. Meunier highlighted production capacity constraints and the strategic importance of the Rogue Hybrid in Nissan’s turnaround plan.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

CleanTechnica editorialists argue that the e-POWER system is “100 percent powered by gasoline” and caution that the small 1.67 kWh battery limits electric-only range, contrasting Nissan’s marketing of the vehicle as an “electric-like” SUV. The outlet also notes the absence of EPA-certified fuel-economy figures.

What’s Next

The SR with the Tech Package will arrive at U.S. dealerships in fall 2026. The remainder of the lineup—SV, SR and Platinum—will follow in early 2027, with production shifting from Japan to domestic plants as capacity expands. Nissan plans to monitor real-world fuel-economy performance after launch before finalizing long-term sales forecasts.
