Meta Unveils Camera-Less Smart Glasses at Upcoming Connect Event

Meta plans to reveal a new line of smart glasses that lack built-in cameras at its annual Meta Connect gathering. The devices are positioned as a next-generation wearable that can deliver augmented-reality experiences without the ability to record video or photos directly.

The company’s earlier Ray-Ban Meta glasses sparked a public backlash after users were reported to have employed the hidden camera feature to record people without consent. Critics informally dubbed the product “pervert glasses,” highlighting concerns over covert surveillance and harassment. The controversy prompted Meta to reassess its approach to privacy and user safety.

In response, Meta has added hardware and software safeguards. An external LED now signals when recording is possible, and the system is designed to deactivate the glasses if the LED is tampered with. Additionally, Meta says it will remove content that breaches its privacy policies from its social-media platforms, extending enforcement beyond the device itself.

By eliminating cameras and strengthening anti-tampering measures, Meta aims to address privacy fears that have hindered adoption of wearable optics. If successful, the move could set a new industry standard for transparent recording indicators and content moderation, potentially restoring user confidence and influencing competitors’ design choices.
