Mirendil AI Startup Pursues $5 B Valuation in New Funding Round

People familiar with the matter say Mirendil, an artificial-intelligence startup founded by former Anthropic PBC researchers, is in talks to raise a new financing round that could bring up to $1 billion of capital and value the company at roughly $5 billion. The discussions involve Kleiner Perkins as a potential lead investor, with Andreessen Horowitz also reported to be considering participation.

Three months after a seed round led by Kleiner Perkins and Andreessen Horowitz that raised $200 million and valued Mirendil at $1 billion, the startup is seeking a substantially larger round. The earlier financing gave the company more than 20 staff members and set the stage for its current fundraising effort.

To support this, the company announced a partnership with Google that provides access to Google Cloud tensor-processing units (TPUs) for scaling model training, and it also works with Nvidia Corp.’s computing infrastructure, with Nvidia listed as an investor.

The fundraising activity reflects growing investor interest in “neo-labs,” firms that prioritize ambitious research over short-term commercialization. Other examples include Thinking Machines Lab and Periodic Labs. While some industry leaders view recursive self-improvement as a path to rapid innovation, recent commentary highlights concerns that such capabilities could pose security risks if they exceed human control, prompting calls for global safety standards.
