The affected items are 23-ounce clear-plastic jars bearing UPC 04119005677. Every recalled jar carries a best-by date of June 16, 2027. The applesauce was sold through Wakefern’s supermarket banners—ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage, and Fairway Market. Wakefern clarified that no other products sold at these stores are part of the recall.
Health Risks of Patulin
Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by certain molds that grow on apples, grains, or cheese. The FDA notes that ingestion of food containing excessive patulin can cause nausea, vomiting, and cell damage. Long-term exposure may lead to immune suppression, nerve damage, headaches, and fever. The toxin is not eliminated by pasteurization, and consumers cannot detect its presence by sight or taste.

Wakefern stated that the recalled jars do not meet the company’s quality standards and should not be consumed. The cooperative advised customers to either return the product for a refund or replacement, or discard it securely by double-bagging and placing it in a tightly sealed container.
