Reuters reported that the hacking group ShinyHunters released a 5,000-line spreadsheet it says represents only a fraction of a larger 2- to 3-terabyte data set. The file contains names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, emergency-contact details, and assignment information for thousands of current and former FBI personnel. Assignment data include specific field-office locations and, in some instances, placements within units handling high-stakes intelligence, security, or counter-espionage work.
ShinyHunters’ Claims and Demands
ShinyHunters announced that it had breached the FBI and was holding the personnel information hostage. The group stated it would refrain from broader distribution of the data until the bureau withdraws an “unflattering” statement the FBI issued about ShinyHunters in May. In a separate statement, the hackers said they were attempting to keep the information from circulating widely while negotiations continue.
