Following the FBI’s 1997 arrest of Dr. Michael Swango, investigators compiled evidence that led to a July 2000 federal indictment on three murders. The indictment arrived on July 17, 2000, and Swango entered a guilty plea on September 6, 2000. In September 2000 Judge Jacob Mishler sentenced Swango to three consecutive life-without-parole terms, the maximum penalty for physicians who kill patients.
