History

Historical Context

Since 2002 the United States and Poland negotiated a European missile-defense site, signing an agreement on August 20 2008 to place interceptors near Redzikowo and a radar in the Czech Republic. Russia opposed the plan, and the European Interceptor Site was cancelled in 2009. In summer 2024 the Aegis Ashore facility at Redzikowo became operational, fielding 24 SM-3 missiles as part of NATO’s air-defence network.
