Historical Context

In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt, facing cramped quarters for his family and staff, secured a congressional appropriation of over $500,000 for architect Charles Follen McKim to add a West Wing to the White House. The new office and cabinet room introduced fire-code standards and later enabled William Howard Taft’s 1909 expansion that created the first Oval Office.
