Core Launch Details
On September 24, Tencent Holdings officially introduced TenPayGo, a standalone mobile-payment app designed for overseas visitors to China. Developed by the WeChat Pay team, the app lets users register with an email address and link foreign credit cards, Apple Pay or other digital wallets to pay at “tens of millions” of merchants within the WeChat Pay network, including shops, restaurants and attractions.
Context and Competitive Landscape
The rollout coincides with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, a high-profile event that draws large numbers of international delegates. Tencent’s move follows a broader push to capture China’s growing inbound tourism market, which the National Immigration Administration reported rose 20.4 % year-over-year to 22.9 million in the first half of 2026. TenPayGo also intensifies competition with rival Ant Group’s Alipay, which already offers similar foreign-card linking capabilities.
Service Coverage and Partnerships
TenPayGo supports seven major international card networks—including Visa and Mastercard—and is set to integrate roughly 60 overseas digital wallets by year-end. Singapore-based Starryblu is among the first wallet partners announced. The app also bundles ancillary services such as meal delivery, ride-hailing, tax refunds and, in Shenzhen, public-transit payments. Tencent disclosed a parallel partnership with PayPal as part of the app’s launch strategy.
Market Impact and Outlook
By eliminating the need for a local phone number, TenPayGo offers a simpler onboarding experience for short-term visitors, addressing a long-standing barrier where many Chinese apps require domestic mobile registration. Analysts note that the app could expand Tencent’s share of the inbound payment market, especially as visa-free policies continue to boost foreign arrivals.
Official Statements
The company positioned TenPayGo as the first mobile-payment product specifically built for inbound tourists, aiming to broaden the reach of its WeChat Pay ecosystem.
