After joint US-UK work on a more capable Harrier began in 1973, Britain left the program in 1975 and re-joined in 1981, giving Rolls-Royce a 75 % engine share. The first production AV-8B entered USMC service in January 1985, eventually delivering 127 jets that each logged about 12,000 flight hours, paving the way for today’s Rolls-Royce AE3007N contracts for the MQ-25 drone.
