Historical Context

The Taiwan Relations Act, signed on April 10 1979 after the U.S. shifted recognition to the People’s Republic of China, gave Congress authority to sell defensive weapons to Taiwan. From 1990-2020 Washington approved more than $30 billion in arms packages, including a $2.2 billion sale in 2019.
