Political Career and Prison Sentence
Butler served as the first Sinn Fein MLA for the Lagan Valley constituency and sat on Lisburn City Council from 1997 until 2011. In 1974 he was convicted of the murder of reserve RUC constable John Rodgers, a 50-year-old officer shot on foot patrol on the Antrim Road in Glengormley. He served a 15-year prison term before being released and entering politics.
Work with Relatives for Justice
After leaving elected office, Butler joined Relatives for Justice, a group that assists families of victims of the Troubles. He worked with the organisation for more than 15 years, providing “care, diligence and gentle guidance,” according to a spokesperson for the group, who described his death as a “great shock” and said the group was “heartbroken.”
