Infrastructure Gaps and Planned Expansions
Officials briefed the CM on ageing transformers, overloaded networks and limited coal and gas supplies that are constraining the ability to meet peak demand. Minister Nirmal Kumar indicated that Tamil Nadu will need around 600 new substations and up to 6,000 transformer installations or upgrades to strengthen the distribution network. The upgrades are slated to be carried out in phases over the next five years to address network congestion, major outages and poor power quality.
Renewable Energy and Storage Initiatives
The chief minister highlighted the need to expand renewable-energy use, promoting rooftop solar installations with a Union subsidy of Rs 3 lakh and an additional state subsidy of Rs 1 lakh for systems up to 3 kW. He also called for immediate implementation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) policy to improve grid stability and support the state’s self-reliance goal.
