History

Historical Context

In March 2014, after Russian troops seized Crimea, a disputed referendum on 16 March reported 96.77% support for joining Russia, a result the UN General Assembly rejected by a 100-to-11 vote. The episode set a pattern; when the September 2026 State Duma poll gave United Russia 57.83% of the party list, EU diplomat Kaja Kallas led sanctions on officials running elections in occupied Ukrainian areas.
