History

Historical Context

In October 1973 OAPEC embargoed oil to the United States and allies, slashing Middle-East exports by up to 70% and raising world crude from $3 to $12 a barrel. Led by Saudi Arabia, the shock reshaped energy politics and proved coordinated Arab action could pressure Western markets. On 25 September 2024 Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Defence Agreement, recalling that 1973 precedent.
