Miliband used the encounter to press for the release of Lindsay Foreman and Craig Foreman, a couple from East Sussex who have been held in Iran for more than 20 months. In February, each was sentenced to ten years in prison on espionage charges that they deny. The Foreign Office reiterated that their welfare remains a priority and called for their immediate release.
Iranian Position and US Reaction at the UN
Later in the session, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the General Assembly, insisting that any future deal must include an end to the U.S. blockade of Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He rejected President Donald Trump’s threat to “annihilate” Iran, saying the Iranian people would “never bend the knee.” The U.S. delegation walked out of the chamber at the start of Pezeshkian’s speech.
