Historical Context

After the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape sparked nationwide protests, the Supreme Court created a special fast-track bench that began hearing the case in early 2013, leading to death-penalty convictions in September 2013. The Verma Committee’s report, based on over 80,000 public suggestions, prompted the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and the establishment of six fast-track courts to accelerate sexual-offence trials.
