The licensing relationship originates from a 2019 settlement that ended a two-year worldwide legal battle over wireless-patent royalties and modem-chip supply. That settlement created a six-year global patent license beginning April 1 2019 and gave Apple an option to extend the deal, which it used to push the expiry to March 31 2027. A separate 2023 supply contract allowed Qualcomm to provide 5G modem chips to Apple through at least 2026, but Apple has been transitioning to its own C-series modems since the iPhone 16e.
