Chinese Carmakers Surge in EU Plug-In Hybrid Market Amid Record Petrol Prices

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Development

Chinese manufacturers have become the dominant source of new plug-in hybrid registrations in the European Union. In August, the EU added 30,720 vehicles, a 4.5 % year-on-year rise, and Chinese brands accounted for roughly 92 % of that net increase, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). BYD’s registrations more than doubled to 20,845 units, while Chery’s volume tripled to about 14,000. The surge coincides with a sharp climb in petrol prices across the bloc, reaching a record of over €2.30 per litre (US$9.91 per gallon) in Germany this month.

Market Context

Higher fuel costs have accelerated consumer interest in electrified powertrains. Battery-electric registrations grew 62.7 % year on year in August and represented 21.7 % of new registrations for the first eight months of the year, matching the share of petrol-powered cars. While the EU has signaled intent to limit the expansion of Chinese automotive firms, the latest registration data show those firms capturing the bulk of new demand despite regulatory scrutiny.

Data Snapshot

  • Overall EU growth (August): +30,720 vehicles, +4.5 % YoY.
  • Plug-in hybrid share: Chinese brands ? 92 % of net increase.
  • BYD: 20,845 registrations ( > 100 % increase).
  • Chery: ~14,000 registrations (? 200 % increase).
  • Battery-electric growth: +62.7 % YoY, 21.7 % of new registrations YTD.

Implications

The rapid uptake of Chinese plug-in hybrids suggests that price-sensitive European buyers are turning to affordable electrified options when petrol becomes costly. This trend may pressure EU policymakers to balance market-access concerns with consumer demand for lower-emission vehicles.

Outlook

Analysts note that continued fuel-price volatility could further entrench Chinese brands in the EU market, while forthcoming EU measures aimed at curbing their expansion will shape the competitive landscape in the months ahead.
