GM Unveils 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD with New Powertrains and Steering

New Heavy-Duty Models and Powertrain Options
General Motors introduced refreshed 2027 versions of its Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups. Both trucks can be equipped with a new 8.3-liter V-8 Duramax diesel—branded “Mongoose”—that delivers 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque. An updated 6.6-liter gasoline V-8 is also available, producing 412 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, aided by a newly designed turbo-jet intake manifold, enhanced cooling, and lubrication for heavy-load operation. Each powertrain is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
Towing Capacity Increases
The 2027 HD models raise maximum conventional-hitch towing capacity to 20,000 lb. When equipped with a gooseneck hitch, the trucks can haul up to 38,000 lb. Dual-rear-axle diesel configurations guarantee a minimum of 30,000 lb towing capability. The 2500 series tops out at 23,200 lb, while the crew-cab version reduces that figure to 22,400 lb.
Steering, Braking and Driver-Assist Enhancements
GM says the trucks replace the legacy recirculating-ball steering found on prior heavy-duty models with an electrically assisted rack-and-pinion system. The new setup provides roughly 30 percent more steering power than the previous hydraulic system and is positioned as the first in-segment electrically assisted steering. An electronic brake-boost system also debuts, complemented by 14.6-inch front rotors, four-piston front calipers, and upgraded rear-brake hardware. According to GM, these changes improve heat handling, linear brake travel, and overall confidence when hauling heavy loads.
Availability and Pricing Outlook
GM indicates that the 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD are slated to arrive at dealerships by the end of the year. Pricing details have not yet been released, but GM expects the information to be disclosed shortly before launch.
Why the Updates Matter
The new diesel engine, higher towing limits, and first-in-segment electric steering collectively aim to strengthen GM’s position in the competitive heavy-duty pickup market. By addressing driver-feedback on steering feel and braking performance, the 2027 models seek to enhance both work-site productivity and on-road confidence for owners who regularly tow or haul substantial loads.
