History

Historical Context

The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, enacted in 1958 to let the government declare ‘disturbed’ areas, was first applied in Assam and Manipur and later spread to all Seven Sister states. After the Supreme Court’s 2016 ruling curbing immunity, the Ministry of Home Affairs used the same six-month renewal template to extend AFSPA in Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh in 2026 following a Kamjong shooting.
