Delay of ID. Buzz to 2028 Model Year

Volkswagen has announced that the electric ID. Buzz minivan will re-enter the U.S. market in the first half of next year as a 2028-model-year vehicle. The company had previously planned a 2027 launch after skipping the 2026 model year, but both 2026 and 2027 have now been omitted. The upcoming version will include updated software, vehicle-to-load (bidirectional) charging, and digital-key integration, as well as the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port that was slated for earlier models.

Background and Market Challenges

The ID. Buzz debuted in the United States in late 2024 with a starting price near $60,000 and an EPA-rated range of about 234 miles. It arrived at a time when the $7,500 federal EV tax credit was no longer available, and it has been subject to higher import tariffs imposed on European cars. Two stop-sale orders further limited its rollout. In May, Volkswagen had publicized new trim options, revised wheel and color choices, and a “Tourer” trim aimed at camping enthusiasts, but those enhancements have been postponed along with the launch.

Sales Figures and Production Shifts

During its first full year (2025), Volkswagen sold 6,140 ID. Buzz units in the United States. In the first half of 2026, sales rose modestly to 2,481 units, a 16-unit increase over the same period in 2025, indicating that inventory from the 2025 model year was still being cleared. In April, Volkswagen halted production of the ID.4 at its Tennessee plant, redirecting capacity toward higher-volume gasoline SUVs, a move that underscores the brand’s broader reassessment of its U.S. EV strategy amid waning demand and relaxed fuel-economy regulations.

Official Response and Future Outlook

A Volkswagen spokesperson emphasized that the ID. market. The spokesperson added that postponing the launch allows Volkswagen to bundle a broader set of customer-focused enhancements into a single release and promised additional details in the coming months. The company’s next steps will involve finalizing pricing, confirming the NACS charging port, and preparing dealerships for a rollout expected before July of next year.
