Xiaomi Introduces “SuperPixel 2.0” Privacy Screen on the 18 Pro

Six months after Samsung launched its Galaxy S26 series with a built-in privacy screen, Xiaomi has added a comparable feature to its flagship 18 Pro line. The company calls the system “SuperPixel 2.0,” which uses a dual-pixel arrangement: standard wide-angle pixels paired with narrow-angle privacy pixels. In normal mode both pixel sets illuminate the screen, while activating privacy mode disables the standard pixels. Viewers positioned beyond roughly 60 degrees see a darkened screen, preventing onlookers from reading notifications, messages, or other content.
How It Works and Activation Options
Xiaomi says the 18 Pro’s display incorporates a new M11 luminescent material capable of reaching up to 4,000 nits of peak brightness and supporting the BT.2020 color gamut. Users can toggle the privacy mode through the Quick Settings shade, remap a physical AI key, or issue a voice command to Xiao AI. The system also allows app-specific activation or automatic engagement when the front-facing camera detects a face behind the user.
Comparison with Samsung’s Implementation
Both manufacturers employ pixel-level privacy control, but Xiaomi emphasizes that its approach does not compromise brightness or image quality in privacy mode. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra has been reported by some reviewers to appear darker and more grainy when the feature is enabled. Xiaomi attributes the difference to the M11 material and the retention of full brightness levels even when privacy pixels are active.
Significance for Android Flagships
The addition of SuperPixel 2.0 positions Xiaomi as the second major Android maker to embed privacy screens directly into flagship hardware, reducing reliance on third-party accessories or software overlays. By integrating the feature at the panel level and offering multiple activation pathways, Xiaomi aims to set a new standard for on-device privacy in high-end smartphones.
