On June 22 1944 President Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, the GI Bill, creating a small Veterans Administration that funded $15 billion in loans for 2.2 million World II veterans. That precedent of federal veteran benefits grew into today’s Department of Veterans Affairs, which now handles over 3 million disability claims each year, distributing $207 billion.
