Historical Context

On 16 December 2012 a Delhi physiotherapy intern was gang-raped and died 13 days later, prompting UN condemnation and nationwide protests. The government created the J.S. Verma Committee on 22 December 2012; its report, incorporating about 80,000 suggestions, led to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act passed in March 2013. Delhi University students at Lady Shri Ram College and Gargi now cite that law while demanding improved campus lighting and pink-squad patrols.
