Fire Engulfs Greek Ro-Ro Ferry Blue Carrier 2 North of Mykonos

On the morning of September 25, a fire broke out aboard the Greek-flagged roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry Blue Carrier 2 while it was sailing north of the island of Mykonos. The blaze originated on the deck, likely within one of the vehicle garages, and quickly spread across large portions of the vessel. All 29 persons on board—28 crew members and a single truck driver—were evacuated safely by lifeboats and later rescued by nearby ships. No injuries were reported.

Blue Carrier 2 is a 1997-built ferry registered in Greece, measured at 23,986 gross tons and 9,655 deadweight tons. At the time of the incident the ship was transporting 166 trucks and 29 cars on a voyage from Syros to Samos. The Panhellenic Seamen’s Union indicated that many of the trucks were carrying flammable materials such as fuel, oxygen and chemicals, raising concerns about the potential severity of the fire.

The Hellenic Coast Guard, assisted by passenger vessels and patrol boats, coordinated the evacuation. Attica Ferries, the operator of the vessel, confirmed that the crew and the truck driver were rescued and that the evacuation was organized using onboard means. The Coast Guard deployed at least two firefighting vessels and a specialized salvage tug equipped for fire suppression. A conference call convened by Vice Admiral Christos Kontorouchas, Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard, brought together senior officials from the Coast Guard, the Hellenic Fire Service, Attica Ferries, and representatives of the salvage company Megatugs Salvage & Towage to manage the emergency.

Blue Carrier 2 entered the Attica Ferries fleet in July 2023 after being acquired from CLDN Ferries, where it operated as the Clementine for Cobelfret Ferries. Attica Ferries is part of the Attica Group, the largest ferry owner in Greece, which also operates the Blue Star Ferries brand.
