In August, the body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was discovered hanging from a tree at an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi. Police Findings and Arrests
The exact cause of death has not been released. Three suspects, all Black, have been taken into custody: Jarques Ratliff, 51, who has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed without bond; Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, arrested this week; and Eric Clark, 45, who turned himself in and faces a murder charge. All are scheduled for a court appearance on the upcoming Monday.
Legislative Reaction and Broader Concerns
Fortune’s case is among several recent deaths of Black individuals found hanging that have prompted federal scrutiny. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts cited at least ten documented incidents in a September letter to Congress, which gathered more than 50 lawmakers’ signatures urging the Justice Department and the FBI to investigate all such deaths. The most recent incident, ruled a suicide, occurred in Prince George’s County, a majority-Black suburb of Washington, DC.
