On early Friday, Nitin Singh, a 45-year-old head constable of the Chandigarh Police, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head inside his government residence in Sector 22. Police reports say his 19-year-old son, Armaan, fired the shot around 4:30 a.m. after an argument with his parents. The father’s mother, Monika Singh, an assistant sub-inspector with the UT police, escaped a subsequent attempt by Armaan to strangle her and raised the alarm from the rooftop. Neighbours broke down the door and discovered the constable’s body on the bed.
Family Conflict Over Marriage and Money
According to police officer Sudesh Kumar, the dispute stemmed from Armaan’s demand to marry his girlfriend from Khatouli village immediately, contrary to his parents’ insistence that he wait until he turns 21—the legal marriage age for men in India. Armaan also demanded INR10 lakh, claiming he needed the funds to start a private business and to support his pregnant partner. Police said the parents initially opposed the marriage, leading to the fatal confrontation.
Prior Offenses and Substance Issues
Police investigations revealed that Armaan had previously been involved in a road-traffic incident in February in which two brothers were killed after his Mahindra Thar struck their motorcycle. He was arrested, later released on bail, and remained out on bail at the time of the shooting. Authorities also noted that Armaan had become addicted to drugs and had been staying at the family home since September 23, when he allegedly brought a country-made pistol and two cartridges from Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
Investigation Findings and Arrest
The police recovered the country-made pistol and ammunition from the house. Initial questioning showed Armaan attempting to claim that an unidentified youth had entered the home and shot his father, but inconsistencies in his account led to a confession that he had fired the weapon. He was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder of his mother, and illegal possession of a firearm.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Armaan remains in custody while investigators continue to examine his alleged involvement in the earlier road-traffic fatality and any further criminal links. The case is being processed by the Sector 17 police station, and further legal action will be determined by the courts.
