During a United Nations gathering, Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined a timetable: initial steps would take four to five days, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen on day six, and “day seven” would launch talks on a final deal covering mutually agreed subjects, including Iran’s nuclear programme. The proposal calls for the United States to lift its naval blockade, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales, release an estimated $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, and observe a regional ceasefire. Reopening the Strait would restore flow through a waterway that carries about one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas.
