Origin and scope
In September 2015 Portuguese journalist Antonio Varela received an email from a newly launched site called Football Leaks, operated under the pseudonym “John.” The platform was created by Rui Pinto with the stated aim of exposing “the hidden side of football.” Early leaks focused on Portuguese clubs Benfica and FC Porto, before expanding to high-profile figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar, as well as the eight-time Premier League champion Manchester City.
