Seattle Center Monorail Station Renovation Begins, Set to Complete by Late 2027

Renovation Overview
Seattle Center’s historic Monorail Station entered a major remodel this month, with construction slated to continue through late 2027 while the service remains in operation. The project, managed by Seattle Center in partnership with Seattle Monorail Services, will reconfigure ticketing, queuing and boarding areas, install automatic passenger gates, and add a ramp linking Thomas Street to the station entrance. Additional upgrades include a resurfaced platform with a reduced gap to train floors, tactile wayfinding surfaces, updated lighting and signage, and sliding doors with wider openings.
Historical Context and Ridership
The monorail, inaugurated for the 1962 Century 21 World’s Fair, continues to link downtown Seattle with the Seattle Center campus. Seattle Center reported that more than 2.2 million riders used the monorail in 2025 and expects ridership to increase as regional light-rail service expands and activity at the campus grows. Seattle Center welcomes nearly 12 million visitors annually to attractions such as the Museum of Pop Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Armory, and Climate Pledge Arena.
Accessibility and Infrastructure Improvements
Renovation work will bring the station into compliance with ADA Title II standards. Planned accessibility features include a new ramp, tactile wayfinding surfaces, and sliding doors with wider openings. The project also addresses aging infrastructure: corroded guardrails will be replaced, lead-paint will be abated, and the roof and skylights will be extended to protect the landmarked train cars from weather.
Operational Impacts and Service Continuity
At least one monorail train will operate throughout construction, with departures expected every eight to ten minutes. Both trains will be deployed during high-demand events, and late-night service will continue for Seattle Center and Climate Pledge Arena activities.
Funding and Anticipated Benefits
The renovation is fully funded by state and federal grants, with Seattle Center overseeing the grant-funded project. Seattle Monorail Services will advise on operational impacts. According to Seattle Center, the upgrades are intended to improve safety, shorten lines, reduce dwell times after major events, and better accommodate growing crowds as the surrounding area’s visitation and transit connectivity expand.
