AI-Driven Server CPU Market Fuels Intel-AMD Competition
By Drooid · · How we work
Market Outlook and Demand Drivers
Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are positioned at the center of a rapidly expanding server-CPU market powered by “agentic AI” workloads that require multi-step processing. Both companies see the total addressable market for server CPUs growing at a compound annual growth rate above 50 % through 2030, with AMD projecting the segment to generate roughly $220 billion in revenue by that year.
Recent Financial Results
Intel reported a 25 % year-over-year increase in Q2 revenue to $16.1 billion, driven by a 59 % surge in its data-center and AI (DCAI) segment, and posted non-GAAP earnings of $0.42 per share after a loss of $0.10 a year earlier. AMD’s data-center revenue rose 107 % year over year in the same quarter, reflecting its stronger share gains.
Shifting Market Share
Mercury Research notes AMD’s server-CPU market share climbed to 34.5 % in Q2, up from 27.3 % a year prior, while Intel’s share fell correspondingly. UBS analysts attribute AMD’s advantage to higher core counts and multithreading capability, which better suit agentic AI tasks. Intel’s CEO Lip-Bu Tan recently told a conference that the company can satisfy only about 50 % of customer CPU demand, underscoring the supply gap that benefits both firms through higher pricing.
Capacity Expansion and Pricing Plans
AMD plans to boost production capacity each quarter, partnering with TSMC in Taiwan and targeting additional expansion in 2027. Intel, despite improving yields, acknowledged ongoing production constraints on its earnings call. Tom’s Hardware reports Intel intends to raise server-CPU prices by roughly 10 % in March 2027, a move AMD is expected to mirror.
Investor Implications
Analysts forecast AMD’s server-CPU revenue could grow over 80 % in the second half of 2026 and more than 70 % in 2027, translating into an estimated 82 % earnings jump this year and a 105 % increase by 2027. Intel’s earnings growth is projected to decelerate from 262 % in 2026 to about 35 % in 2027. The divergent trajectories suggest that AMD may capture a larger portion of the AI-driven server market, while Intel’s margin gains may rely increasingly on price hikes amid persistent supply shortages.
