Historical Context

On 18 April 1988 the U.S. Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis, striking two Iranian frigates, patrol boats and oil platforms in retaliation for the 14 April mining of USS Samuel B. Roberts. The raid forced Iran toward a July cease-fire that ended its eight-year war with Iraq. Today the IRGC Navy’s capture of a U.S. Remus 600 AUV in the Strait of Hormuz revives those 1988 maritime tensions.
