GL.iNet Mango 2: A Pocket-Sized Router Aimed at Secure Travel Connectivity

By Drooid · · How we work

Compact Design and Performance

The Mango 2 (model GL-MG1300) measures 89 × 63 × 15 mm and weighs about 100 g, allowing it to fit easily into a jacket pocket, travel organizer, or backpack. Housed in a bright-yellow case, the device is intended to be quickly located in luggage. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi, delivering up to 400 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and up to 866 Mbps on the 5 GHz band.

Connectivity Options and Built-In VPN Support

GL.iNet markets the router as capable of four distinct internet-connection methods: Wi-Fi repeater, Ethernet WAN, cellular tethering, and a built-in captive-portal client for hotel or public networks that require web-based sign-in. An automatic-failover feature switches to a pre-configured backup (e.g., a tethered smartphone) if the primary link drops. The unit includes a USB-C power port, a USB data port, one WAN Ethernet port and one LAN Ethernet port, enabling wired connections to switches or devices that lack Wi-Fi.

VPN functionality is a central selling point. Users can configure a compatible VPN service through the GL.iNet app, extending protection to all attached devices—including phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, streaming sticks, and gaming consoles. The router supports both WireGuard and OpenVPN in client and server modes, works with more than 30 VPN providers, and is ready for Tailscale, allowing secure remote access between authorized devices. Customizable policies let users route specific devices or domains through the encrypted tunnel while leaving other traffic unencrypted.

Pricing and Availability

The Mango 2 is offered for pre-order at $39.90 through the official GL.iNet online store, with a standard retail price of $49.90 once released.

Why It Matters for Travelers

By consolidating VPN protection at the router level, the Mango 2 eliminates the need for individual VPN apps on each device, simplifying secure connectivity for light travelers who prefer minimal gear. Its compact form factor, multiple connection pathways, and automatic failover aim to address common pain points such as high roaming fees, unreliable public Wi-Fi, and the complexity of managing separate security solutions while on the move.
