Historical Context

In July 1997 Ethiopia sent roughly 1,000 troops into the border village of Bada, sparking protests that escalated into the May 1998 Badme clashes and the 1998-2000 Eritrean-Ethiopian war. The war ended with the 2018 Algiers summit where Ethiopia agreed to cede Badme, restoring diplomatic ties. Yet the unresolved border rivalry resurfaced when the TPLF seized Mekelle Airport in September 2026, prompting an AU warning.
