History

Historical Context

In March 2004 NATO launched Baltic Air Policing, rotating four allied fighters to protect Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania after they joined the Alliance. The mission created a permanent QRA framework that later expanded to other partners. Finland and Sweden’s 2026 Quick Reaction Alert pact, using Gripen jets and naval assets, builds directly on that cooperative air-defence model.
