Record Senate Gains for the National Rally
France’s far-right National Rally (RN) and its allies won 14 of the 348 seats in the Senate in the latest indirect elections, enough to create a parliamentary group for the first time in the party’s history. The result quadruples RN’s Senate representation from the three seats it held after the 2023 vote.
Historical Context of RN in the Upper House
RN first entered the Senate in 2014, when it was still called the National Front, securing two seats. It added three more in 2023. The recent election marks the party’s most significant breakthrough in the traditionally right-wing-dominated chamber, which is refreshed by local elected officials every three years, each senator serving a six-year term.
Composition and Numbers
According to the AFP tally, nine RN candidates were elected, joined by two senators from the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR), the party of former Republican member Eric Ciotti. The remaining three seats were held by RN incumbents from the previous cycle. The hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) also gained its first Senate seat.
Official Reactions
RN presidential candidate Marine Le Pen described the outcome as a “historic victory” and a major milestone for the party’s ability to form a Senate group. RN president Jordan Bardella said the newly elected senators would sit together with UDR allies in that group.
Political Implications
Forming a Senate group gives RN formal speaking rights, committee representation and the capacity to influence legislative debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, when centrist President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to step down. The expanded presence may pressure other parties to adjust their strategies in a chamber that has long been dominated by the centre-right Republicans (LR) and the Socialists.
